Native Plant and Tree Give-Away Aims
to Improve Wildlife Habitat Throughout Door County

The Big Plant, coordinated by the Climate Change Coalition of Door County, returns on Saturday, May 17, 2025, 10 a.m. until the plants run out, with the Door County Land Trust’s native tree and plant giveaway—an opportunity to bring more pollinator-friendly perennials and native trees into our landscapes. The plant giveaway takes place in the Epicenter parking lot, outside the DCLT office, located at 217 N 4th Ave, Sturgeon Bay.

In 2023, more than 15,000 trees were planted through The Big Plant thanks to the efforts of participating organizations. To ensure everyone can take part, Door County Land Trust includes trees as well as perennial plants in its giveaway, making it accessible to those with small yards, balconies, or apartments.

“Whether you have a planter on a porch, a small backyard, or several acres, you can plant something that helps native insects, birds, and wildlife,” says Cinnamon Rossman, Door County Land Trust’s Director of Charitable Giving. “As these trees grow and flowers bloom, they’ll be a reminder of the things we can do to preserve and improve our environment.”

The 2025 giveaway features a variety of native trees:

  • Balsam Fir
  • White Pine
  • White Spruce

And pollinator-friendly perennials:

  • New England Aster (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae)
  • Golden Alexander (Zizia aurea)
  • Common Ironweed (Vernonia fasciculata)
  • Marsh Blazing Star (Liatris spicata)

Details about each of these can be found in this handy PDF.

Each of these species is hardy in Door County and supports insects, birds, and other wildlife.
