Volunteers help make Invasive Plants Workshops a Success
In the fall of 2004, with generous financial assitance from the Lakeshore Natural Resources Partnership (LNRP), the Door County Land Trust (DCLT) undertook an ambitious habitat restoration program at two of its most ecologically important preserves: Kellner Fen Wetland Preserve and the Bay Shore Blufflands Preserve.

Although largely ecologically intact, several aggressive, non-native plant species have invaded both preserves and threaten to displace native plant communities and destroy wildlife habitat. The worst of these are common and glossy buckthoorn (Rhamnus species), bush honeysuckle (Lonicera species), and common reed grass (Phragmites australis).

DCLT Land Protection Specialist, Jodi Milske worked with the two-landowner associations within the project areas: the Lake Forest Park Road Association and the Bay Shore Property Owners Association to promote one educational workshop per preserve. Participant were given literature, shown how to field-identify several invasive plant species, and watched a demonstration of control techniques. These events were met with enthusiasm: most attendees chose to stay and participate in removal efforts. In addidion to conducting on-the-ground eradication activities, Land Trust staff used GPS/GIS mapping techniques to document the locations and extent of invasive plant populations.

This project was successful on several levels. It resulted in a reduction in the population of adult plants, served as a model for programs at other sites and the stewardship volunteers have become ambassadors whithin the community for the fight against invasive species.

The Door County Land Trust and the conservation community of the Door peninsula are very grateful to LNRP for its generous support. The work begun in 2004 will continue to reap ecological and educational benefits for many years to come.
